Toronto, November 18, 2011 — Bullfrog Power®, Canada's 100 per cent green energy provider, announced today that South St. Burger Co., a Canadian premium burger restaurant, has expanded its commitment to green electricity by signing on its newest location in Bayview Village, Toronto, for Bullfrog Power. The decision complements South St.'s recent move to green the electricity requirements of its Oakville restaurant—and brings the number of the company's bullfrogpowered restaurants in Ontario to eight. South St.'s growing commitment to green power, which has been ongoing since South St. bullfrogpowered its first location in 2010, brings the organization to the "Steward" category in the bullfrogpowered Green Index, Bullfrog's national ranking of green power purchasers in Canada. The organization has achieved the highest Green Index status of any Canadian fast food restaurant. By choosing green power, South St. is reducing its environmental impact and supporting the development of new renewable generation in Canada.

“Choosing green electricity for our Bayview Village location—which will be the chain’s first LEED-certified unit —was a natural next step for us and supports our philosophy to “Be the Right Choice” for our customers,” says Jay Gould, President and Founder, South St. Burger Co. and New York Fries. “When patrons come to one of our bullfrogpowered restaurants, we’re proud to offer them a premium burger product sourced from conscientiously farmed beef in an environment powered with 100 per cent renewable electricity.”

Through the agreement, Bullfrog Power's generators inject renewable electricity onto the grid to match the amount of power South St. Burger Co.'s bullfrogpowered restaurants use. In Ontario, Bullfrog's electricity comes from wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact by Environment Canada under its EcoLogoM program—instead of from polluting sources like coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear. Bullfrog Power uses the collective demand of its customers to support the development of new renewable generation in Canada. To date, several new wind projects have been commissioned in Canada to meet the demand of the growing community of bullfrogpowered homes and businesses.

In addition to choosing renewable electricity, South St. has adopted LEED construction standards and is applying for LEED certification for its new Bayview Village location. Ninety per cent FSC-certified wood as well as no or low-VOC paints and sealants were used in the restaurant's construction. South St. has also installed energy efficient solutions at other locations, including grill hoods with heat exchange ventilation systems and high-efficiency fryers. All South St. locations use LED lights where possible. Additionally, the company's Barrie location has installed a solar-powered water heater, and its Markham location has implemented a solar photovoltaic system that generates renewable electricity on-site and supplies it to the Ontario grid. In recognition of its sustainability efforts, South St. Burger Co.'s Don Mills location was awarded the 2011 Special Recognition Award for Innovation in Energy by the Association for Retail Environments in March and Foodservice and Hospitality Magazine's Green Leadership Award in June of this year. South St.'s beef has no added hormones, antibiotics or additives, and is purchased from farms that practice conscientious and natural farming.

“South St. Burger Co. is quickly becoming an environmental leader in the premium fast food industry,” said Tom Heintzman, President, Bullfrog Power. “By choosing green electricity for its newest location, the company is reinforcing its dedication to providing its customers with a lower-impact burger choice.”
