Atlantica Hotel Halifax signs on for 100 per cent green electricity
with Bullfrog Power®
Halifax, November 1, 2011 — Atlantica Hotel Halifax, a landmark hotel in downtown Halifax, has announced that it is bullfrogpowering® its meeting rooms and administrative offices with 100 per cent renewable electricity. The decision complements the hotel's existing sustainability plan and will enable Atlantica Hotel Halifax to further reduce its emissions footprint, support the development of new renewable energy in Canada, and help create a cleaner world for today and tomorrow.
“We are committed to making a difference in the lives of our guests, colleagues and community,” says Colleen Forward, Director of Sales and Marketing, Atlantica Hotel Halifax. “Signing on for Bullfrog Power will ensure that we are meeting and exceeding our guests' expectations and will help us involve our colleagues and partners in making our hotel more sustainable.”
Through the agreement, Bullfrog's Maritime generators inject renewable electricity into the grid to match the amount of power Atlantica Hotel Halifax uses in its meeting rooms and administrative offices. In the Maritime provinces, Bullfrog sources from EcoLogoM-certified wind farms and low-impact hydro facilities in Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. Bullfrog's goal is to advance the development of wind power throughout the Maritimes.
In addition to choosing 100 per cent renewable electricity, Atlantica Hotel Halifax has implemented a number of green initiatives as part of its Environmental Stewardship Program. These initiatives include hotel-wide recycling and organic waste diversion programs, limiting the use of single-serve items such as creamers in the dining room, and retrofitting lighting to be more energy efficient. Atlantica's success with its Environmental Stewardship Program has enabled the hotel to increase its Green Key rating from the 3 Green Key level to the 4 Green Key level as part of Canada's Green Key Eco-Rating Program.
“We applaud Atlantica Hotel Halifax for expanding its sustainability plan to include green electricity for its meeting rooms and administrative offices,” said Holly Bond, Director, Eastern Region, Bullfrog Power. "By supporting 100 per cent renewable energy, the hotel is both reducing its environmental footprint and providing a more sustainable option for guests.”
